Meerkat may impact Second Inventory market share

New viewer saves your build from Second Life

Working import/export of a Second Life building is at your fingertips - for free. It is working already so why don't you start backing up your valuable creative content?

Maxping wrote about the new Meerkat viewer which was recently released. By now Maxping members have tested and verified that the export/import functionality really works. It allows saving a complete set of rezzed assets from Second Life to a single file. The file can be later imported to any compatible grid or a standalone Opensim virtual world server.

The possibilities for Second Inventory are getting narrower as the open source tools start to provide similar functionality for free (free as in.. free beer).

It is also possible to export/import your avatar shape from Second Life to Opensim using the realXtend viewer. Adam Frisby wrote about his still private tool to back up whole regions in one go.

I also expect some new content to pop up at rexxed.com, once people start using the Meerkat viewer. If you want to sell/distribute your Meerkat viewer -saved content, feel free to contact us at maxping.magazine@googlemail.com.

Here are the steps needed to do the export/import:

one Problem with Meerkat is, that while in Second Inventory i can backup where i have full permission - with Meerkat it seems only possible for the Owner.

For people who had a intensive SL , running a business with people creating stuff for money or using some Alt-avatars, this is very limiting.

Maybe the Meerkat-Crew should re-think that.

Besides that, Meerkat features are really very nice.

Great stuff. Title of article needs adjustment though. Should read: 'Second Inventory no longer required'. Will keep watching you guys ;)

...and, unlike Second Inventory, Meerkat is also available for Linux and MacOS.

MeerKat is also available for Windows not just Mac & *Nix.

It should also be noted that it exports objects as XML and restores them from XML. It does not export contained scripts or other items as such.

I have been testing the system for some time now and it holds great promise. It is really nice to be able to take a "Full Sim Build" from OpenSim and back it up and restore it INTACT ! Plus it handles the Large Prims properly.

Is it ready for primetime ? Not yet, but it certainly has the potential and future if the code is polished and refined some more. Remember this is a new product and needs some evolution time.

In response to a question from Evely:

I guess you talk about Second Life, since you refer to a 15.000 prim region (wich is no opensim or realxtend limit).

In Second Life , Linden Labs did decide to limit prims (new ones) to 10m length, because prim´s are part of their business limit.

In generall we are happy to help, but the easiest way is probably to post comments or user the new forum (see top right corner), more people can help quicker.

cheers,
Ralf
