Microsoft's Virtual World Presence Moves to ReactionGrid

Opensim gains more weight

Second Life loses one of the most remarkable companies when Microsoft closes down their virtual island. Opensim based ReactionGrid offers apparently better support and performance at lower prices.

Microsoft Island on Second Life is shutting down on October 31 2009. The SL .NET User Group, IT Pros in SL, and all other Microsoft Island user groups are encouraged to head to http://reactiongrid.com and join fellow Microsoft professionals and enthusiasts on ReactionGrid for user group meetings, events, and a bit more space for everyone. ReactionGrid is a PG-rated OpenSim grid with free registration, run by Kyle & Robin Gomboy and Chris Hart, who between them run the SLDNUG and IT Pros user groups on Second Life (as G2 Proto, RobinG2 Proto, and Strawberry Fride). Kyle, Robin, and Chris have organised several events for Microsoft, including the Heroes Happen Here launch of the 2008 range of products and more. Moving to a virtual world running on the Microsoft platform (Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008) on OpenSim - a C# application - makes ReactionGrid the ideal choice for a new start for the user groups.

A farewell / welcome party is planned for October 31 on both Microsoft Island on Second Life, and on ReactionGrid, to celebrate the move, and there will be some freebies that attendees can win during the event, including a full copy of Visual Studio 2008 Professional edition.

What we have heard, all the customers have been happy about ReactionGrid's support and enthusiasm. Well done!

Opensim as a platform is starting to have serious support from big players. In addition to Microsoft; IBM, Intel and Nokia have already shown their interests as written already here: IT giants back up open source 3D Web

As good as OpenSim is getting. It is still "alpha software" according to prominent warnings on the the http://opensimulator.org page. ReactionGrid is by far my favorite of the OpenSim options, but even with the best support possible it is still supporting Alpha software. My personal experience has been OpenSim is still wonderful for small groups, experimental and educational use, and especially for previewing during content creation.

I would argue with Mohax if you understand the limits of OpenSim & guide your clients through them for their event or interactive design you will have success like the many ThinkBalm, Microsoft, Greenbush Project, Virtual Recovery, Elearningproject & dozens & dozens of other world owners we service on a daily basis.

Our events are 10-25 users typically with several monster machines able to do in excess of 80 users. This is vetted by our team & our long term clients.

OpenSim is in production use on ReactionGrid each and every day.

Most users only see our public work but in fact we service so many independent worlds now in China, Ireland, UK, Canada, South Korea, USA, Mexico, South Africa, Spain & more in the educational & enterprise space.

If you are an educator or small business we offer a free 30 day 4 sim virtual machine trial on a case by case basis to show the capabilities & the challenges of our platform.

Pioneers welcome- This is when the early adopters gain that crucial foothold to what surely will be a major player in opensource or any virtual world platform genre, OpenSim http://opensimulator.org .

Come see me inworld as "Reaction Core" & I will show you the real facts, the features & challenges & even more important the amazing community of innovators there.

Significant news but no surprise. Reaction Grid has been closely related to MS from the start and (although I am no techie)I believe the .net framework is a major part of the RG structure.

Knowing the history of MS, I suspect their presence in SL was a learning experience prior to going off to rebuild their own version. Some months back I asked someone from MS on Metanomics whether they had plans to implement a virtual environment in their OS (akin to "active desktop" when they finally discovered the web) and was told "quite possibly", although saying it will be many versions away yet. But who knows?

. The Center for Media Research has released a study by Vertical Response that shows just where many of these ‘Main Street’ players are going with their online dollars. The big winners: e-mail and social media. With only 3.8% of small business folks NOT planning on using e-mail marketing and with social media carrying the perception of being free (which they so rudely discover it is far from free) this should make some in the banner and search crowd a little wary.
