Virtual worlds and mainstream adoption - why it is important?

From kids play to serious business and back

First it was just kids playing computer games. Now some grown-ups have seen the promise in the technology. What are the benefits of mainstream adoption and why it is needed?

I was once in a big strategy sharing meeting. One of the attendees placed a question: "Why do we seek growth, can't we just be happy with what we already have?".

Although this was a good question from the ecology perspective, it did not manage to change the chosen growth strategy. The answer was clear: "Only the top five are making any profit in the industry and the rest are falling behind all the time.". So it was and still is really important to be the best.

Virtual worlds need to seek growth too to stay afloat. Otherwise the big breakthrough of virtual worlds into everyday use will be delayed. The warning signs are already here: Hypergridbusiness.com writes that Metaplace is going to shut down their virtual world. The Metaplace is not alone in this.

Virtual worlds are seen as a potential disruptive technology and as such may change the world a lot.

The earlier we can reduce travel, the more we save the earth - for example.

Think about the web. There is not one central killer application that makes the web successful. The value comes from information, people and connections within the system.

It will be the same for virtual worlds. More users, more content, wider acceptance = more value.
