Recent addition of the FreeSwitchVoiceModule means that voice now works in Opensim using standard viewers
Hot off the press! In a recent blog post by Dr. Scofield it was
noted that AsteriskVoiceModule and SIPVoiceModule have been dropped
in favour of the shiny new FreeSwitchVoiceModule.
Unfortunately the AsteriskVoiceModule required the replacement
of SLVoice on the client side, so this meant that users would not
be able to natively chatter and natter with a standard version of
the Second Life® client. Users of other
clients also had to make modifications for their voices to be
heard.
A talented chap called Rob Smart deduced that FreeSwitch
supports the same voice codecs that SLVoice uses and thus by
building the voice module around that - no viewer modifications
would be required. As a result the FreeSwitchVoiceModule was
developed and apparently works quite well!
"I tried this out yesterday with Teravus - it works
surprisingly well." Commented Adam Frisby.
Currently the new module does not support spatial voice or
speaker indication however it's very new so presumably it's only a
matter of time.
This is a great move forward in the evolution of Opensim as many
of the enterprise business cases for the software such as immersive
education and virtual conferencing require voice support by
default.
Well done chaps!
Maxping will shortly do a follow up article outlining our
experiments with the new voice module, however in the meantime if
you would like to try it out for yourself there are some detailed
instructions on the Opensim Wiki
