What´s up in OSGrid ?

Edited by: Ralf Haifisch

OSGrid has been a place to start for all those interested in opensim for a while. By that, more and more people knew about osgrid, but newbies did not find interesting content, people and places. Now with the UFS the first major roleplay group made a step from Second Life into osgrid, bringing great content.

So, all this opensim stuff is around there for a while.  We have seen some commercial oriented Gridprovider emerging and more and more people are interested.

But what about acceptance ?

OSGrid as the open developer grid may be a good indicator.  While some functionality (i .e. physic scripting) may still block some people getting into the new metaverse, special interest groups did already discover the possibility to have a huge mass of land and prim at low cost. This is a major st ep to get content and attract more people.

Recently I saw the announcement on http://www.osgrid.org/elgg/pg/event_ca lendar/view/114141 .  The "Trekkies" did enter the OSGrid.  With four regions and more to come, they did already build a interesting place to visit.

And this is everything, but not just a empty collection of regions.  While the Starfleet home is still located

in Second Life - they did build a really pretty and trek-style place.  Sometimes, there are even other people to meet.  J  T

his "Excalibur colony" is something like an outpost from the SL base. I found Fred McCellan (Operations Officer for the USS Silverwolf) was so friendly to show me around.

Some examples what you can find:

A place for trekkies to fell well

Interesting buildings done at a well skilled level, worth to visit anyway

Typical trekkie stuff, like teleport in startrek-style teleporter (displays etc)

A welcome center, where you can drop your application to become an officer at the fleet

A star gate with destinations in hypergrid and OSGrid

a command center up in the air (approx.. 1700m)

Sector 4 training center (approx. 2700m) with 2 starship training bridges

The control centre (impressive)

The academy with classrooms

Event hall

Personal offices (for the highflyer..)

And more…

The crew has been working on the place for a long time, i.e. the training center for 6 month. All the Scripted objects and the possibility to run a full featured role with them for sure have taken a lot of this time, as well as all the high detailed and precise placed textures.

Newbies are welcome - for some positions you need to graduate from the academy, which is free. (donation based)  After application you will receive a welcome package with instructions and will be contacted.  People are grouped in different fleets, according to their time zone, 5 fleets worldwide. Lessons are trainer-leed and usualy have even have a test at the end.

Should be fun to visit - and maybe even join the fleet.

Leave it up to the UFS team to do a stellar performance no matter where they land. Nice work and congratulations...
