Hitchhiker's guide to the Metaverse

Introducing gridhop.net

Edited by: Jani Pirkola

Hypergrid is the way to travel. But where to go? How to pick the right destination? As they say in the other guide: don't panic...

The Gridnauts Guide to the Metaverse

Some of you may still remember Torley's dramatic Video "Across the Metaverse", when on June 2008 some Avatars teleported from a Linden-Grid to an IBM Grid running OpenSim, using OGP. The Open Grid Protokoll is now gathering Dust since September 2008.

And then, there was Hypergrid.

Soon after OGP has fallen into a deep Sleep, justincc explained in his blog, what Hypergrid is. While LindenLab seems to be consequently ignoring this new technology, Hypergrid-links are spreading all over the Independent Grids. And if you feel lost in this big new world, here is the Site that took the challenge of creating something like a travel guide through the Hypergrided Worlds.

Please welcome www.gridhop.net.

To be more precise, gridhop.net is a database for Hypergrid enabled Regions. So you can find an appropriate Hypergrid enabled Region on you Home Grid, and from there, start your cruise through the Metaverse.

I always found it to be very complicated to find the right Regions and Grids to do a Hypergrid jump, but on my first test drive with gridhop.net, i travelled through 4 different Grids without any Problems. Just make sure to read the Help & Howto page to get started.

The official launch of the Site will be celebrated with a Party at the Freiland Region on OSGrid on Friday, 3rd July.

How does it work?

gridhop1

This site is designed to be used with the build-in web browser of your viewer. Just copy and paste ( or type ) the URL http://www.gridhop.net into the chat fields of the viewer, press enter and then click on the url in the chatwindow. This should open the build-in web browser of the viewer. First, look for a Hypergrid enabled Region in the Grid you're currently connected to. Use the "Teleport in same Grid" link, and a Teleport Window should open. Once you arrived there, you can choose any Grid you want to visit, select a Destination Region, and click the "HyperGrid Jump"link. Again, a Teleport Window will open, but this one will take you not only to another Region, but to another Grid. As a rule of thumb, when the Region Pictures loads in the Teleport Window, you should be able to teleport there. The Database is still kinda small, but the i guess it will grow over time, when more and more Regions get HG enabled and more and more People list their Regions on gridhop.net

What else?

Yes, and this one is for the scripters/developers out there. You can download all the Information that is stored in the Database as either XML , JSON or in HG NotecardFormat. Check out the Page about Export Formatsfor more Information. So i see a Hypergrid HUD on the horizon.

If you're Region is Hypergrid enabled, and that could even be a Standalone Sim, you may want to want to have it listed at gridhop.net. Just use "Add new Destination" and fill out the Form, and wait for the Hypergridders to drop into your Region.

This can be another Step in the right Direction on the way to "World Wide Virtual Words". I could imagine that sites like gridhop can be for Virtual Worlds, what the first search engines have been for the web.

If you would like to meet the makers and learn more about gridhop, or if you just like to party, you'll have the chance on Friday, 3rdJuly 20:00 GMT at the Freiland Region ( OSGrid ).

Very cool, thanks for bringing that to our attention!

I'll add this in the comments of the OpenSim-in-a-box hypergrid part: http://web3dblog.wordpress.com/2009/06/24/opensim-in-a-box-pt2-enabling-hypergrid/

Thanks Ziah for pinpointing to this service.
I am rather curious whether they will keep pace with the foreseen giant growth of standing alone virtual worlds, when everybody will have one or more of them running.
For the WWW we needed the DNS and other structures to be built to hiphop from one site to another. Will they be able to build a DNS-like (or even more complicated) structure on their own? This is the question I am warring about.

I wrote a Hypergrid Gateway system / scripts and placed them on our Forums for everyone to use. Full Source etc are all there. This is the system which uses the HGLocations Notecard. The Gateways can be any config from Stargates to "Magic Doors" or whatever you want.

I will be updating and making a more advanced version and posting it there when time permits. I am also near completlion of a HUD which will help a number of folks to get around.

Happy HyperGriding

I for one would like to see edges of regions be visual gateways to other sims. That way i can look at it from afar, and then walk, fly, or drive right in. For that to happy OS needs to to real time prototyping with powerful tools such as Erlang. Then again we could do a "progress bar" like SL, which has been on every computer since the original "Hello" Macintosh.
